According to independent journalist Lee Fang, the Meta company has reportedly spent millions of dollars on private security for Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook.

Meta's corporate disclosures reveal they have spent $43.4 million on security costs over the past three years to ensure Zuckerberg's safety. The New York Post also reported that Meta increased its spending on Zuckerberg's security to $14 million in 2023, up from $10 million in previous years.

Meta justified the need for private security by stating it is necessary due to Zuckerberg's "position and importance to Meta." It is worth noting that Zuckerberg only receives a salary of $1 per year and no additional compensation in the form of bonuses or equity awards. Despite this, according to Forbes, Zuckerberg has a net worth of $13 billion.

Interestingly, during the same three-year period, Zuckerberg's family-run foundation, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, donated millions of dollars to groups advocating defunding the police. One such group is PolicyLink, which received a $3 million donation from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

PolicyLink is a "national research and action institute advancing racial and economic equity by Lifting Up What Works." The organization has an "Equity Manifesto" that addresses racism and oppression, both overt and systemic, and aims to achieve economic inclusion, healthy communities, a just society, and equitable development.

PolicyLink has been vocal in its demand to defund the police. In July 2020, the organization stated that "officers do not keep us safe or help us thrive" and called for divesting from institutions that harm communities and investing in violence prevention, housing, healthcare, and other community-based safety strategies. The organization even provides a comprehensive web resource for organizers to find everything they need for their campaign to defund the police in one place.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative also donated over $2.5 million to Solidaire, an organization that fights against corporate greed, economic inequality, climate change, gender and racial injustice, and anti-blackness.

In June 2022, Solitaire announced its support for defunding the police and created a document to help philanthropy understand the demand and support the work. Solidaire also highlighted its activist network, which includes the "Anti-Police Terror Project" that successfully removed $18 million from the Oakland Police Department's budget.
