Three crosses were set ablaze outside the Sylmar Christian Fellowship Church in Los Angeles early Thursday morning, according to police reports.

The incident, which occurred at around 4:30 a.m., involved the use of a fire accelerant, and one of the crosses was knocked down to the ground.

Fortunately, a good Samaritan was able to extinguish the flames with a garden hose, and authorities believe that the crosses may have also self-extinguished.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) stated that the church, which has been operating for nearly three decades, had never experienced any threats or vandalism prior to this incident.

The LAPD, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), and FBI agents, is actively investigating the case through the House of Worship Taskforce.

This task force allows for the sharing of information and resources, including the use of accelerant-sniffing K-9 units from the ATF. The LAPD and FBI will also be looking into the possibility of a hate crime.

As of now, there are no suspects, descriptions, or motives in the case. Investigators are currently searching for any surveillance footage or witnesses that may provide valuable information.

Pastor Pierre Howard, speaking at a press conference, condemned the attack, expressing his disappointment that such acts of hatred still occur in today's society.

He speculated that the perpetrator may have made a bad decision in the heat of the moment, hoping that this was the case.

Cross burnings have a long history of being associated with racism against Black Americans and hatred towards Christianity.

In a similar incident in March, a Mississippi man was sentenced for burning a cross in his yard to intimidate his Black neighbors. The LAPD is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 1-877-527-3247.
