Fireworks displays on the Fourth of July have long been a cherished tradition in the United States.

However, climate reporters from the Washington Post are warning that these displays contribute to air pollution, particularly in areas already affected by wildfires.

In fact, they go so far as to label the holiday as "the most polluted day of the year."

According to air quality data, fireworks release harmful pollutants into the atmosphere, with pollution levels comparable to severe wildfire smoke.

This revelation is particularly concerning given the recent Canadian wildfires that caused thick smoke to spread across the East Coast, leading to record-breaking air pollution in New York City.

Bill Magavern, the policy director of the California nonprofit Coalition for Clean Air, argues that this situation calls for a shift in how Americans celebrate Independence Day.

He suggests finding cleaner alternatives to fireworks, especially in areas with poor air quality.

This sentiment is echoed by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, which recently adopted a new fireworks display permit requiring shows to implement practices that reduce pollutants falling into bodies of water.

As a result, several firework shows were canceled for failing to meet these standards.

The U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico has also encouraged the use of alternatives to fireworks, such as noisemakers, glow sticks, or red, white, and blue silly string.

Their press release emphasizes the importance of preventing human-caused wildfires, particularly during a time when firefighting professionals are already stretched thin.

However, some environmentalists criticize these suggestions, pointing out that aerosols from alternative products can also have harmful effects.

Rebecca Sobel of WildEarth Guardian argues that it is crucial to be vigilant about the chemicals present in everyday items. She questions whether the Forest Service should have been more aware of the potential harm caused by these alternatives.

The Washington Post highlights that the majority of firework pollution comes from private homes and streets rather than public displays.

They also note that communities with restrictions on fireworks tend to experience less pollution. Furthermore, research indicates that communities with higher proportions of Hispanic residents are exposed to greater particulate pollution than others.

Jun Wu, an environmental health scientist at the University of California, emphasizes the need for people to be aware of the costs associated with firework burning.

These costs extend beyond monetary expenses and include health-related costs and environmental impact.
