Republican lawmakers, including Senator Bill Hagerty and Representative Michael McCaul, are demanding answers regarding allegations of mishandling classified documents by President Biden's special envoy for Iran, Robert Malley.

Malley has been stripped of his security clearance and placed on unpaid leave pending an investigation. McCaul sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressing concerns about Malley's conduct and the State Department's failure to respond to oversight requests.

The letter also accused the State Department of potentially misleading Congress and the public. Malley declined to appear before the committee, citing the illness of a family member, but McCaul argued that the Department did not disclose the suspension of Malley's security clearance or the investigation into potential misconduct.

The State Department spokesperson declined to comment on the congressional correspondence. Malley confirmed that his security clearance is under review but expressed confidence in a positive outcome.

Senator Hagerty took to Twitter to question Malley's alleged misconduct and when President Biden and Secretary Blinken became aware of the accusations against Malley.

Hagerty also questioned why Malley was allowed to continue in his diplomatic role while under investigation.

Hagerty highlighted Malley's past contacts with Hamas and other extremist groups, expressing concerns about his background and views. Hamas is designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government and the European Union.

Last month, Hagerty and over 30 senators introduced a bill that would require a congressional vote on sanctions relief to Iran. Former Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, chairman and CEO of United Against Nuclear Iran, respectively, emphasized the need for Congress to assert its authority and act on a bipartisan basis in response to the Malley suspension.

Malley has been accused of making significant concessions to Iran's regime as part of a planned nuclear deal, which could provide up to $17 billion in sanctions relief in exchange for temporary restrictions on Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program.

The Biden administration denied reaching an interim deal with Tehran but acknowledged ongoing backdoor negotiations.

Malley has a history of advocating for normalizing relations with state sponsors of terrorism. In a 2006 Time magazine article, he argued for engaging with Iran, Syria, Hamas, the elected Palestinian government, and Hezbollah.

Hezbollah is classified as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government and is Iran's chief strategic partner.

Senator Marco Rubio expressed the need for Congress to scrutinize and weigh in on the secret deal Malley is allegedly putting together with Iran. Former national security adviser John Bolton, speaking at a conference in Paris, expressed his surprise at the situation, stating that he could not recall a similar case in U.S. history.

The growing criticism of Malley has also fueled a campaign by Iranian American human rights activist Masih Alinejad to remove Malley as special envoy.

Alinejad's petition has garnered over 136,000 signatures since October. Alinejad and other activists accuse Malley of misrepresenting the nature of protests against Iran's regime and pushing for negotiations with the Islamic Republic.

The National Union for Democracy in Iran, a U.S.-based organization, stated that it has been leading the charge against Malley's appointment and hopes that a legal investigation and the rule of law will compel action if misconduct is proven.
