Joy Reid, anchor for MSNBC, asserted on Thursday that affirmative action was the sole reason for her admission to Harvard University.

Reid made this statement while appearing on "All In with Chris Hayes" to discuss the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that deemed affirmative action in college admissions a violation of the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause.

Despite opposing the decision, Reid acknowledged that she personally benefited from affirmative action.

During the interview, Reid stated, "I got into Harvard only because of affirmative action.

I attended a relatively unknown school in a small suburb of Denver, Colorado. I didn't attend prestigious institutions like Exeter or Andover, nor did I have access to college test prep.

However, someone from Harvard came to Denver specifically to recruit me. We met at the Village Inn Restaurant for a pre-interview, and I was subsequently admitted to Harvard. I was brought in through affirmative action."

The Supreme Court case that prompted this ruling originated from allegations that Asian American students were being held to a higher standard compared to Black or Hispanic students due to affirmative action.

However, several liberal figures have argued that the decision will primarily benefit White students.

For instance, author Michael Harriot tweeted, "Before you begin your thinkpiece, the Supreme Court DID NOT strike down Affirmative Action. Admission preferences for legacies, donors, employee families, and special recommendations are still allowed. The Court struck down Affirmative Action For everyone except WHITE PEOPLE."

While Reid did not specifically address the impact on Asian Americans, she did mention that her presence at Harvard was questioned by White individuals.

She recounted, "In a large conference class, some White students stood up and claimed, 'Those students, the Black students, they're only here because of affirmative action.' This sparked a heated argument among us."

Reid further explained, "I had never faced scrutiny regarding my academic credentials or intelligence until I arrived at Harvard. It was a defining moment of my experience there. It was one of the many reasons why my freshman year was miserable.

I felt completely out of place. People constantly told me, 'You shouldn't be here.' Yet, some of the students I encountered were far less academically capable than myself or other Black students."

Other MSNBC personalities have also criticized the Supreme Court's decision on affirmative action. Dean Obeidallah, an MSNBC columnist, tweeted, "Next up, the GOP's Supreme 'Court' will strike down the Civil Rights Act to allow Jim Crow segregation to start again.

Please don't dismiss this as being over the top. This so-called court has already curtailed reproductive freedom, gutted the Voting Rights Act, and now ended affirmative action."

Charles Coleman, an MSNBC legal analyst, argued, "By limiting affirmative action, particularly based on a misunderstanding or disingenuous conversation about race, we are restricting people's access to the American Dream. This is something we have not honestly addressed in our discussions."
