Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has criticized the U.S. Supreme Court, accusing it of an "abuse of power" following recent landmark decisions rejecting affirmative action and President Biden's student loan debt plan.

Ocasio-Cortez proposed impeachment and subpoenas as measures to limit the justices' power.

In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," Ocasio-Cortez stated, "The Supreme Court is far overreaching their authority," and called for discussions on judicial review as a check on the courts.

Last week, the Supreme Court issued its final decisions of the term, including rejecting the use of race in admissions, ruling in favor of a Christian web designer who refused to create same-sex wedding websites, and striking down President Biden's student loan debt cancellation plan.

Democrats have viewed these rulings as attacks on the left and have criticized the court as "illegitimate."

Ocasio-Cortez expressed concern over these rulings, stating, "These are the types of rulings that signal a dangerous creep toward authoritarianism and centralization of power in the courts." She also highlighted Justice Elena Kagan's comment that the court is assuming the power of a legislature.

Ocasio-Cortez has been a vocal advocate for court-packing and limiting the court's power. She suggested that subpoenas and impeachment should be considered. She stated, "If Chief Justice Roberts will not come before Congress for an investigation voluntarily, I believe that we should be considering subpoenas...

We must pass much more binding and stringent ethics guidelines where we see members of the Supreme Court potentially breaking the law."

She continued, "There also must be impeachment on the table... the Supreme Court has not been receiving the adequate oversight necessary in order to preserve their own legitimacy."

Ocasio-Cortez argued that the court's actions have undermined its own legitimacy, posing a danger to democracy.

In contrast to Ocasio-Cortez, President Biden recently clarified his position against expanding the court during an interview on MSNBC.

He expressed concern that expanding the Supreme Court would "politicize it maybe forever in a way that is not healthy." He also suggested that some members of the court are realizing their legitimacy is being questioned.

Ocasio-Cortez made headlines after the Supreme Court's affirmative action ruling when she suggested that the court is not serious about its "ludicrous 'colorblindness' claims" and should have abolished legacy admissions.

She pointed out on Twitter that "70% of Harvard's legacy applicants are white" and criticized the court for not addressing this issue.

It is important to note that legacy admissions were not before the court, as many social media users pointed out.
