The suspect, identified as Taylor Taranto, 37, was spotted by law enforcement a few blocks from the former president's home and attempted to flee, but was pursued by US Secret Service agents.
Taranto is the subject of an open warrant on charges connected to the insurrection, as confirmed by two law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press.

Additionally, Taranto had reportedly made threats against a public figure on social media. When apprehended, he was found to be in possession of weapons and materials that could be used to construct an explosive device, although no such device had been assembled at the time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

It remains unclear whether the Obamas were present at their residence during the arrest. Metropolitan Police took Taranto into custody on charges of being a fugitive from justice. Following the arrest, the explosives team thoroughly examined Taranto's van and determined that there were no further threats to public safety.

According to the Tri-City Herald newspaper, Taranto is a US Navy veteran and previously served as a webmaster for the Republican Party in Franklin County, Washington state. In an interview with the newspaper last year, he stated that he was volunteering for the party, though the exact nature of his involvement in the riot remains unknown.

The insurrection involved supporters of then-President Donald Trump who vandalized the Capitol, assaulted law enforcement officers, and sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Since the events of January 6, over 1,000 individuals have been charged with federal crimes related to the Capitol riot. Of those, more than 600 have pleaded guilty, while approximately 100 others have been convicted following trials presided over by judges or juries.

Over 550 defendants have already been sentenced, with more than half receiving prison terms ranging from six days to 18 years. The investigation into the insurrection continues as law enforcement agencies work to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
