A mystery is underway in Russia involving two Russian generals who have seemingly vanished into thin air following the Wagner Group mutiny.

Fox News reports Valery Gerasimov and Sergei Surovikin are the two generals that have gone missing in action.

The disappearance from public view began after Yevgeny Prigozhin halted his "march for justice" rebellion against Moscow and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to a report by Reuters, Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov has not made a state TV appearance or been seen in public since Prigozhin's mutiny ended. Before the end of the rebellion, Prigozhin had demanded Gerasimov turned over to his group. No one has seen Gerasimov since the June 9 defense ministry press release.

Gerasimov's role in the current conflict is as the commander of the Russian invasion force in Ukraine. Western military analysts also note he is one of the three commanders with access to a "nuclear briefcase."

General Sergei Surovikin, aka "General Armageddon," is a deputy commander. Although it is unconfirmed, The Moscow Times reported that officials arrested Surovikin on Sunday. The arrest allegedly happened the day after Prigozhin's mercenary troops began the mutiny.

The New York Times reports Surovikin had advanced knowledge of the plans used by Prigozhin to stage a mutiny against Russia's military leadership. The news of his alleged arrest came after the news report was released. The New York Times reported American intelligence was attempting to determine if Prigozhin received help from Surovikin.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin stated on Wednesday that there would be significant speculation and gossip surrounding the reports.

Reuters reported that a purge was underway, according to Rybar, a Telegram channel. Rybar claimed Russia's top officials were attempting to remove military personnel they believed were showing "a lack of decisiveness" in stopping the rebellion. The purge is based on reports that the Wagner Group did not encounter strong resistance from Russia's military at the start of the mutiny.

Rybar said, according to Reuters, "The armed insurgency by the Wagner private military company has become a pretext for a massive purge in the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces."

On Tuesday, Putin thanked the army for preventing a civil war. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was in attendance; Gerasimov was not. Gerasimov's deputy, Surovikin, was last seen in a video on Saturday where he appealed to Prigozhin to halt the rebellion.

A former U.S. defense intelligence officer, Rebekah Koffler, said, "General Armageddon [is] arrested, and General Gerasimov, one of the holders of Putin's three nuclear footballs, is missing - a threatening situation. Until Ukraine is cruised by Russia and Putin gets to keep Crimea and the provinces he has annexed, no one will sleep safely. This is what Putin wants the world to know."
