Anthony Fauci Appointed As "Distinguished Professor" At This Elite University

Starting on July 1, Fauci will serve as a Distinguished University Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, where he will provide clinical care, conduct research, and train future physicians in infectious diseases. He will also have additional responsibilities in Georgetown's School of Public Policy.

Georgetown University described Fauci's appointment as the "highest professional honor" they can offer. In a statement, Georgetown President John DeGioia expressed the school's profound honor in welcoming Fauci, referring to him as a "dedicated public servant, humanitarian, and visionary global health leader."

Fauci commented on his new role: "what do I have to offer to society?" He acknowledged that while he could continue conducting experiments in the lab, his experience and inspiration could be valuable to the younger students.

During Fauci's tenure at the National Institute of Health (NIH) head, he was associated with several controversial lab experiments. One such experiment involved the NIH funding gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The study, "Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence," received a $3.1 million grant and involved working with live animals and novel coronaviruses between 2014 and 2019, years before the reported beginning of the COVID-19 viral outbreak.

Georgetown University has had previous associations with Fauci. In July 2020, Fauci gave a presentation to university students on public policy related to COVID-19. John Monahan, now the Senior Advisor to the Dean at the Department of Medicine, introduced Fauci during the 2020 presentation. Additionally, Fauci was a keynote speaker at a Georgetown event in 2017, where Monahan also appeared, discussing pandemic prevention.
