Dave Portnoy, the president and founder of Barstool Sports, has criticized leftist policymakers for proposing environmental regulations on coal-fired ovens used by New York City pizza makers.

The regulations would require pizzerias with coal and wooden-fire ovens installed prior to 2016 to cut carbon emissions by 75%. In a video uploaded to Twitter, Portnoy expressed his outrage at the proposal, calling the individual who came up with the regulations a "pink-haired, crazy liberal" who had never worked a day in the real world.

He argued that the expense of adding necessary filters and other devices to ensure these ovens are green enough could financially hobble New York City pizzeria-owners, whose coal and wood-fired ovens have made the city’s pizza famous around the world for generations.

Portnoy defended the use of coal ovens in pizzerias, stating that all the best pizzerias use them and have been grandfathered in for over a hundred years.

He mocked the rationale behind the regulations, stating, "We gotta stop the emissions, I guess it’s pollution, blah, blah, blah!" He also criticized the government for going after pizzerias when there are more pressing issues in the city, such as crime, rats, trash, and flash mobs robbing stores.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection has drafted new rules that would require pizzerias to install filters on these filters as well as hire an engineer to routinely inspect the carbon emissions produced by these ovens. One pizzeria owner told the New York Post that purchasing filters and paying for routine maintenance on them has already cost him $20,000.

Less than 100 restaurants in the city would be affected by these new regulations, according to one New York City official cited by the New York Post. Fox News Digital has reached out to the New York City DEP for a response to complaints against these proposed regulations.

Portnoy's criticism of the proposed regulations highlights the potential financial burden on New York City pizzeria-owners and the impact on the city's iconic pizza culture. The proposed regulations have also raised questions about the government's priorities in addressing pressing issues in the city.
