A welfare check on an animal welfare worker's home in Mantua, Ohio, has led to a shocking discovery of 146 dead dogs, according to the Portage Animal Protective League's Humane Investigations Department.

The check was conducted by authorities after Barbara Wible, co-founder of nonprofit rescue organization Canine Lifeline of Macedonia, Ohio, collapsed. The incident triggered investigations into "evidence of ongoing fatal animal neglect" at Wible's "current" home in Parma and the Mantua home. The Humane Agent discovered the deceased dogs in varying stages of decay, with many of them confined within their crates. No dogs were found alive.

According to the Portage Animal Protective League, Wible had a pending animal cruelty charge in another jurisdiction. Some surviving dogs at Wible's Parma residence have since been transferred to the Parma Animal Shelter. Canine Lifeline, which has matched over 6,000 dogs with their forever families since its founding, expressed shock and horror at the gruesome discovery. The organization and its staff are cooperating with the appropriate authorities.

Canine Lifeline added that Wible "was a very private person who appeared … to be devoted to these rescue animals; it appeared to be her life's passion." The organization is "sickened and blind-sighted to learn this was a facade." Volunteers and adoptive families that gave their time and energy to the cause of animal welfare are now navigating feelings of bewilderment, betrayal, and grief in light of what has been learned about Wible's secret treatment of animals.

Neighbors told FOX 8 Cleveland that humane workers rescued dogs from the home last year. Canine Lifeline had a net operating loss of more than $9,000 last year, according to documents obtained by FOX 8. Necropsies, or animal autopsies, will be performed on the dogs to determine their causes of death.
