Democratic congressional delegate for the U.S. Virgin Islands, Stacey Plaskett, has found herself in the limelight, caught up in the controversy surrounding her association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

A recent report by the Washington Free Beacon revealed an exchange of emails dating back to 2018 between Plaskett and Epstein's former assistant, Lesley Groff, suggesting Plaskett's appeal for financial support from the disgraced financier.

According to the emails, Epstein donated $5,400 to Plaskett's campaign, the allocation split evenly between her primary and general election funds. "If you would share this invitation with Jeffrey I'd be much appreciative. I would be grateful for his support and the support of those that he may direct to assist me," the July 12, 2018 email from Plaskett to Groff read.

However, this wasn't the first time Epstein was courted for political contributions. The paper trail goes back to 2014, involving then-First Lady of the Virgin Islands, Cecile de Jongh. It is de Jongh who, serving as Epstein's office manager then, seems to have orchestrated the initial link to Plaskett.

In a 2014 email to Epstein, de Jongh wrote, "Your help is needed. We are trying to get Stacey Plaskett elected to Congress. Shawn Malone (current senate president) is running against her in the Democratic primary in August." De Jongh explained further, "Shawn is the one that came after you in the senate hearing last week. He is nasty and needs to be defeated and we would have a friend in Stacey."

Court documents related to a lawsuit the Virgin Islands filed against JP Morgan brought these interactions to light. They show De Jongh encouraging Epstein to help rally $75,000 in donations for Plaskett's campaign, given the individual limit of $2,600.

Reflecting on these revelations on WTJX-FM's show, Analyze This, Plaskett conceded it was a "bad fundraising decision" on June 8. Further controversy ensued when Plaskett admitted in a May 9 deposition to having met with Epstein in September 2018 at his New York City townhouse. The discussion, she said, revolved around a potential $30,000 donation to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. This meeting transpired less than a year before Epstein's arrest on federal charges of sex trafficking of minors.

Adding to the controversial moments, Plaskett appeared on MSNBC on June 18, blurting that 2024 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump needs "to be shot," before swiftly correcting herself and stating he needs to be "stopped." In April, Plaskett had called for the incarceration of Twitter Files journalist Matt Taibbi, accusing him of perjury for using CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) rather than CIS (Center for Internet Security) during his testimony.

These allegations cast a murky shadow on Plaskett's political career, highlighting the fine line between political financing and ethical boundaries. The relationship between political figures and private donors continues to be demanding scrutiny, and the Plaskett-Epstein connection is a stark reminder of its potential pitfalls.
