In a direct rebuke of former U.S. President Barack Obama, ex-South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has fiercely defended herself and fellow Republican Senator Tim Scott against allegations of minimizing the issue of systemic racism and inequality

These claims emerged following Obama's recent assertions on a CNN podcast, suggesting the Republican leaders were downplaying racial disparities.

The Indian-American politician penned an op-ed in the Daily Mail, writing, "You'd think the first black president of the United States would have hope and pride in America." Haley contended that Obama's criticism ignored the significant strides the nation had made over time. She highlighted her potential presidential run, being the first female minority governor in American history, as a testament to America's ongoing progress.

Responding directly to the accusations, Haley expressed, "I want every little girl and boy — white, black, brown, you name it — to know they live in the best country in the world. In this country, they can grow up to be anything. Even the president of the United States."

In a discussion hosted by his former aide David Axelrod, Obama drew parallels between his tenure and the approach of Scott and Haley, the latter being a possible contender in the 2024 presidential race. "I think there is a long history of African American or other minority candidates within the Republican Party who will validate America and say, 'Everything's great, and we can all make it.' I mean, Nikki Haley, I think, has a similar approach," Obama stated.

Haley rebuffed Obama's comments, terming them as "condescending." In her response, she brought attention to her parents' journey from India to South Carolina in pursuit of the American dream. "Yes, they worked hard. And yes, they faced racism, but they overcame it. They taught me and my siblings that even on our worst day, we are blessed to live in America," she asserted.

The former governor criticized Obama for straying from his 2008 message of hope and change. She quipped, "Does Barack Obama think he's the only minority who could be elected president? It sure sounds like it," adding, "His 2008 presidential campaign was built around hope — hope in America's progress. He also used to have pride in our country."

In her strategy to distinguish herself from her former boss, ex-President Donald Trump, and the incumbent President Joe Biden, Haley promoted the need for a generational change in the country's leadership. Advocating for competency tests for politicians over 75, she declared, "If America was racist, none of this would have happened — full stop. The America of 2023 would be the same as the America of 1776. But things are night-and-day different."

Haley commended the monumental contributions of historical figures such as Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King Jr., and Abraham Lincoln. She called for an intensified fight against racism, discrimination, and anti-Semitism. However, Haley held Democrats accountable for stagnation in addressing societal issues, saying, "Barack Obama speaks for the leadership of the Democratic Party."

She concluded her argument with a promise. "If they get their way, black and brown kids will think they're inferior and have no place in America. But I will make sure every child has the best shot at the best life." As the potential presidential race heats up, Haley's positioning of herself against her predecessors sets the stage for a contested fight. Only time will reveal how this unfolds.
