U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data reveals that federal authorities stationed along the southern border seized approximately 40% more drugs in May compared to April, as illegal migrant encounters decreased.

The agency seized roughly 18,300 pounds of drugs in May at the US-Mexico border, compared to approximately 13,100 pounds in April. Meanwhile, illegal migrant encounters at the southern border dropped from roughly 183,000 in April to about 169,000 in May, according to federal data.

However, according to CBP data, drug seizures along the southern border are down from roughly 193,000 pounds between October 2021 and May 2022 to approximately 164,000 pounds during that period in fiscal year 2023. CBP seized about 26,800 pounds of drugs in April alone at the southern border.

Senior Official Performing the Duties of CBP Commissioner, Troy A. Miller, said in a statement Tuesday that the decrease in illegal migrant encounters at the southern border was due to "comprehensive planning and preparation efforts." He added that CBP remained focused on national and economic security missions, including managing increased passenger throughput at the start of a busy summer travel season and increasing seizures of dangerous drugs by 10% over April.

The increase in drug seizures comes as the Biden administration faces criticism for handling the southern border, with Republicans accusing the administration of failing to address the surge in illegal immigration and drug trafficking. The administration has defended its policies, stating that it is working to address the root causes of migration and improve border security.
