Space Force Lieutenant General DeAnna Burt recently spoke at a Pentagon Pride event, where she expressed her concerns about the impact of "anti-LGBTQ+ laws" on her hiring practices.

She stated that such laws sometimes force her to overlook qualified candidates due to their personal or familial circumstances. Lt. Gen. Burt highlighted that over 400 anti-LGBTQ+ laws have been introduced at the state level since January of this year, and this number is increasing, which could be dangerous for service members, their families, and the readiness of the force as a whole.

Lt. Gen. Burt explained that the danger lies in the possibility of more qualified candidates being passed over for jobs because of the impact of these laws on them. She stated that when considering potential candidates for squadron command, she strives to match the right person to the right job based on their performance and relevant experience.

However, she also considers their circumstances and their family an essential factor. If a good match for a job does not feel safe being themselves and performing at the highest potential at a given location, or if their family could be denied critical health care due to the laws in that state, she is compelled to consider a different candidate, even if they are less qualified.

It is unclear which specific laws Lt. Gen. Burt was referring to. On the one hand, she may be referring to laws that ban transgender-related medical procedures for minors, which liberals call "gender-affirming" care. On the other hand, she may be referring to states that have placed limits on abortion within the bounds of the Constitution. While Lt. Gen. Burt framed such laws negatively, proponents argue they are necessary to protect children and unborn lives.

The Space Force was contacted for comment, but no response was received by press time. However, an official for the Space Force provided Fox News with a statement: "The Department of the Air Force is committed to ensuring a culture of inclusivity and respect. We value the diversity of our force and are committed to providing an environment where all Airmen and Guardians can thrive." Lt. Gen. Burt concluded her speech by stating, "I am proudly here as an ally."
