In a poignant interview with the Los Angeles Times, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California's Governor Gavin Newsom, has broken her silence about a tragic childhood accident that claimed her older sister's life.

The incident occurred during a family vacation in Hawaii in 1981 when a then-six-year-old Siebel Newsom accidentally ran over her sister, Stacia, with a golf cart.

The incident, she confessed, occurred just days shy of her seventh birthday while she and several other children, including Stacia, were playing with the golf carts. Unaware of Stacia hiding behind the cart, Siebel Newsom, the second eldest of five sisters, inadvertently reversed, resulting in her sister's untimely demise.

In an emotionally charged recount of the tragic episode, Siebel Newsom, now 48, expressed her lifelong quest to fill the void left by her sister. "I felt the pressure to be perfect, to make my parents forget, by being two daughters instead of one," she said. She acknowledged the presence of survivor's guilt, which spurred her to strive for more significant impacts in her life, a factor she attributes to her subconscious need to compensate for her sister's loss.

Reflecting on the accident's psychological impact on her life, she remarked, "And I have to do something to improve other people's lives or have an impact, double my own, which is a little crazy. I don't use the word 'crazy.' But you know, it's aspirational." She further reflected on her propensity to be hard on herself and her newfound understanding that blaming a child of 6 or 7 years old for such an accident is fundamentally unjust.

Siebel Newsom, who later attended Stanford, earning an MBA and playing for the college soccer team and the U.S. Soccer's youth team for women under 23, is no stranger to trials. She also bravely shared about her sexual assault case against the disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, dismissed in 2022 as the jury could not reach a verdict.

During her testimony, she claimed that Weinstein had sexually assaulted her during a 2005 meeting with the sinister line, "Relax, this is going to make you feel better." At the time, Siebel Newsom was 31 years old and working diligently to build her acting and producer career. The assault occurred in a suite at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, where she had agreed to meet Weinstein, expecting others to be present.

Speaking candidly about her horrifying experience, she said, "It was a horrific experience. I wouldn't wish it on anyone." She also expressed her hopes to expose and challenge the societal issues that allow serial perpetrators to escape justice for their heinous acts. "And so this was just, I felt like, one way I could contribute, because I [had] stayed relatively silent except for with friends and peers," she stated.

After launching her acting career in the late 2000s, Siebel Newsom appeared on the television show "Life" starring Damian Lewis and an episode of "Mad Men" as party girl Juanita Carson.

Governor Gavin Newsom, proud of his wife's courage in speaking out against Weinstein following the trial, urged others to "keep fighting to ensure that survivors are supported and that their voices are heard." In sharing her vision of California's future, Siebel Newsom echoed her husband's sentiments: "I want California to be that shining light on the hill."
