A 68-year-old California man, Dana Rivers, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a brutal triple murder in 2016.

Previously known as David Chester Warfield, Rivers made headlines in 1999 after being fired as a high school teacher for expressing his gender transition to students.

Rivers was convicted for the gruesome killings of Charlotte Reed, 56; Patricia Wright, 57; and Wright's adopted son, Benny Toto Diambu-Wright, 19. According to court documents, the details of the crimes are alarming. Rivers shot Reed twice before stabbing her over 40 times, focusing mainly on her face and neck. Both Wright and Diambu-Wright were also shot and stabbed. Diambu-Wright, a recent high school graduate, attempted to flee but only made it to the driveway before collapsing from his injuries.

The evidence against Rivers was substantial. Police apprehended him attempting to leave the scene on his motorcycle, fittingly named "Barbie." He was discovered clad in Reed's clothes, drenched in blood, and found carrying a silencer-fitted handgun, loaded magazines, a bloody knife, and marijuana. Upon arrest, Rivers said, "I know I'm in trouble."

The Alameda County jury took a few hours to determine Rivers guilty of three first-degree murders last fall. A motion for a new trial was promptly dismissed. During the sentencing, Judge Scott Patton referred to the crime as "the most depraved crime I ever handled in the criminal justice system in 33 years." Patton acknowledged that sentencing someone "to die in prison" is not to be taken "lightly," but maintained that it was the only just punishment in this case.

"Frankly, you deserve to spend the rest of your life in prison," Patton addressed Rivers.

At the hearing, Richard Wright, the brother of Patricia Wright, mourned his sister as a "peacemaker" and the "rubber band" that kept his family united. "When Dana Rivers killed my sister, she broke that rubber band," Wright expressed.

The narrative of Rivers is complex. He lived more than four decades of his life identifying as a male. In 1999, Rivers decided to transition to female, adopting the name Dana Rivers, and began to openly discuss his transition with students against the wishes of the Center Unified School District. It was reported that he shared his experiences of being "sodomized as a youth" and feeling like "a woman trapped in a man's body." This led to his dismissal from his teaching position after a school board vote.

After his dismissal, Rivers became involved in gender-related activism, lecturing at renowned universities such as Stanford and UC Davis. He also delivered keynote speeches for the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Tiffany Club. Rivers met one of his victims, Reed, through the Deviants MC, an all-women's biker gang.

Despite Reed's discomfort and fear following her departure from the Deviants, she allowed Rivers into her home on November 11, 2016. Reports suggest that Rivers executed his violent assault once everyone was asleep.

Rivers declined the opportunity to speak at his sentencing. After the hearing, he was reportedly taken to San Quentin, a men's prison, for processing. Reduxx, however, has expressed doubt that he will serve his sentence in a men's facility. The news outlet states, "Male inmates do not need to identify as transgender to request transfer [to a women's prison]."

As of the afternoon of Thursday, neither Dana Rivers nor David Warfield is listed on the online public inmate locator system for the California Department of Corrections. The brutal nature of this case highlights the dire consequences of criminal actions and serves as a grim reminder of the importance of implementing justice in society.

The fallout from Rivers' actions was evident at the sentencing hearing, where Richard Wright painted a moving picture of the victims. In remembering his sister, Patricia Wright, he brought to light her role as a "peacemaker," describing her as the "rubber band" that held their family together. He poignantly noted, "When Dana Rivers killed my sister, she broke that rubber band." The grief in his words reflected the deep void left behind by this gruesome crime.

Rivers' past is marked by controversy and change. He lived as a man for more than four decades before transitioning in 1999, adopting the name Dana Rivers. Despite being reprimanded by superiors at the Center Unified School District, he openly discussed his transition with his students, sharing experiences of being "sodomized as a youth," and how he always felt "a woman trapped in a man's body." This led to his dismissal from his teaching position.

After losing his job, Rivers engaged in activism related to gender ideology, speaking at notable institutions, including Stanford University and UC Davis, and addressing gatherings for the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Tiffany Club.

His path eventually crossed with one of his victims, Charlotte Reed, through the Deviants MC, an all-women's biker gang. The ill-fated relationship would lead to a night of horrific violence in November 2016, when Rivers was allowed into Reed's home, culminating in a bloody rampage that ended three innocent lives.

Rivers offered no comments at the sentencing. After the hearing, he was reportedly taken to San Quentin, a men's prison, for processing. However, Reduxx reports, citing recent policies, that Rivers may not serve his sentence in a men's facility as "Male inmates do not need to identify as transgender to request transfer [to a women's prison]."
