Louisiana authorities have arrested a 28-year-old immigrant, Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano, for allegedly posing as a high school student for a year to improve her English.

Gutierrez-Serrano and her mother, Marta Elizeth Serrano-Alvarado, were arrested on June 14 for falsifying government documents, including a passport and birth certificate, to enroll Gutierrez-Serrano in high school, according to a press release from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's office.

The alleged scheme was first brought to the attention of authorities by officials with the St. Charles Parish Public Schools, who received a tip that an adult was attending classes at the high school. Gutierrez-Serrano registered at Hahnville High School on June 18, 2022, and attended throughout the next school year. Police found that she was not involved in any extra-curricular activities while in attendance and had no disciplinary issues.

St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne stated that Gutierrez-Serrano wanted to learn English and had no intention of causing trouble. Although Marta had lived in the United States for a "number of years" under an expired visa, her daughter had only just arrived on American soil in the fall of 2021. Champagne added that the intention behind the alleged scheme was understandable, as it appeared she only wanted to further her education and learn English. However, he emphasized that submitting falsified documents to the government was bad judgment.
