Hamtramck, a unique enclave of Michigan near Detroit, known for being the only Muslim-majority municipality in America, has made a unanimous decision.

In a City Council vote held this Tuesday, it was resolved that the display of Pride flags on public property will no longer be permitted. The council's ruling, which saw a diverse turnout of Muslim and Christian citizens voicing their opinions, was welcomed with applause in the City Hall, as per a report in the Detroit Free Press.

The resolution proposed by Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Mohammed Hassan extends beyond the prohibition of Pride flags. It also rules out displaying flags that signify a "religious, ethnic, racial, political, or sexual orientation group."

Hassan said, "Only, the American flag, and the nations' flags that represent the international character of our City shall be flown." He justified the council's decision as essential to "maintain and confirm the neutrality of the city of Hamtramck towards its residents."

The Councilman further cautioned against the potential consequences of allowing Pride flags, arguing it could create a path for extremist and racist groups demanding similar rights. "The city does not want to open the door for radical or racist groups to ask for their flags to be flown," Hassan wrote.

An elaborate debate preceded the Tuesday vote, during which Muslim attendees and elected officials emphasized that the resolution was not rooted in hate. Mayor Amer Ghalib, whose government comprises many LGBTQ community members or allies on boards and commissions, said they aimed to "serve everybody equally with no discrimination, but without favoritism."

Despite assurances, critics contended the move was discriminatory and would discourage investments in the community. During the proceedings, a lesbian couple even expressed their dissent by sharing a kiss, prompting many Muslim attendees to divert their eyes or pray.

This landmark decision by the Hamtramck City Council is set to affect public display norms in the city significantly, challenging both community sentiment and broader issues of representation and equality.
