WATCH: Newsom Vows To 'Take Down' DeSantis For Controversial Actions Involving Migrants

In a contentious exchange with NBC News reporter Jacob Soboroff, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has hinted at the possibility of pursuing kidnapping charges against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

The situation arose after Florida dispatched several planes carrying migrants to California, a self-declared sanctuary state.

However, Newsom's claims of kidnapping have come under scrutiny due to a conspicuous lack of evidence. Video footage shows migrants signing consent forms, agreeing to relocate to California. California officials have not yet furnished any evidence to substantiate their accusations of "state-sanctioned kidnapping" against DeSantis.

During an interview released on Wednesday, Soboroff pushed Newsom on the issue. The reporter asked, "Ron DeSantis is going to be landing in this city later this month to hold a fundraiser for his presidential campaign. Should he be worried that law enforcement officials in this state are going to arrest him when he walks off the plane?"

Irked by the question, Newsom replied, "Now we're getting to hyperbole." Soboroff retorted, "Well, just respectfully, I mean, I don't think it's hyperbole. You're the one raising the issue of criminality potentially."

To this, Newsom responded, "Potentially. Yeah. And we have to do the investigation. This is California, [the] fourth or fifth largest economy on planet Earth. We mean business. ... And we're not backing away from getting the facts and holding those accountable if they broke the laws of the state of California."

Governor DeSantis, meanwhile, defended his migrant transportation policy during a stop in Arizona. "These sanctuary jurisdictions are part of the reason we have this problem because they have endorsed and agitated for these types off open border policies," he said. "They have bragged they are sanctuary jurisdictions. They attack the previous admin efforts to try to have border security."

The Florida governor noted, "When they have to deal with some of the fruits of that they all of a sudden become very upset about that." The situation continues to stoke tensions between the two states and governors, with legal ramifications possibly looming.
