Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, has expressed concerns over the potential fate of President Biden's student loan forgiveness plan, suggesting that the Supreme Court's "corruption" could lead to its downfall.

The conservative-leaning court is anticipated to deliver a verdict on the financial proposal by the end of the month, with approximately 43 million borrowers eligible for federal relief, some receiving up to $20,000.

In response to an Instagram follower's inquiry about the likelihood of the plan's survival in court, Ocasio-Cortez shared her thoughts on her Story and urged the President not to dismiss a "bad ruling." She stated, "In every conversation we've had with the White House, they feel very strongly about the chances of their case before the court."

However, the progressive Democrat added, "While I personally do not share their same sense of optimism (not because I doubt the legal case, but because I do not believe the SCOTUS' corruption can be trusted), the Biden administration has been insistent that they feel they have a case."

Ocasio-Cortez called for the development of a backup plan and cautioned Biden against merely accepting the Supreme Court's eventual decision, which the White House has already indicated it would do. This could lead to a contentious intra-party dispute when the ruling is announced. "I (and others) in turn have been very adamant on having a Plan B," she wrote. "What we should not accept is a situation where there's no plan B and the administration just shrugs in the event of a bad ruling. Absolutely not."

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that Biden's student loan forgiveness plan will cost around $400 billion. In late January, Bharat Ramamurti, Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, informed reporters that the administration was "confident" in its legal standing, using the HEROES Act to implement its student loan plan. The 2003 law permits the Education Secretary to modify student loan balances in connection with a national emergency.

Ramamurti acknowledged, "Obviously, the Supreme Court will weigh in on that soon, but we are not deliberating or considering any other kind of alternative approach." Last week, the Senate voted 52 to 46 to overturn the measure, with Democratic Senators Jon Tester and Joe Manchin and Independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema siding with Republicans. The repeal resolution passed the House of Representatives in a party-line vote last month.

The White House has already stated that President Biden intends to veto the resolution when it reaches his desk.
