House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has written a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, demanding that he disclose the extent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's involvement in Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into former President Donald Trump.

Garland appointed Smith in 2022 to investigate whether any person or entity violated the law in connection with efforts to interfere with the lawful transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election or the certification of the Electoral College vote.

Jordan's letter follows a report by Special Counsel John Durham, which exposed the weaponization of the FBI and highlighted the department's failure to "uphold their mission of strict fidelity to the law."

"Public trust in the FBI is low," Jordan wrote, citing numerous findings from Durham's report. "It is clear that Congress must consider legislative reforms to the FBI... In the interim, however, due to the FBI's documented political bias, the Justice Department must ensure any ongoing investigations are not poisoned by this same politicization."

Jordan called on Garland to provide information regarding the use of FBI personnel by Smith, including the total number of FBI employees assigned to work on the investigation and how many were operating out of headquarters and the Washington Field Office.

Jordan also demanded whether any of the FBI employees assigned to work on the investigation had previously been involved in matters concerning Trump and whether Smith relied on any information gathered "exclusively by the FBI" before his appointment to Special Counsel.

The Ohio senator criticized the FBI over its "political bias," claiming that the "so-called 'corrective measures'" the department instituted in the wake of the Durham Report "have done nothing to address, let alone cure, the institutional rot that pervades the FBI."

"Given the FBI's documented political bias, it is imperative that the Justice Department provide Congress with a full accounting of the FBI's involvement in Special Counsel Smith's investigation," Jordan wrote. "The American people deserve to know the truth about the FBI's role in this investigation and whether it was conducted in a fair and impartial manner."
