Target Corporation's Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Keira Fernandez, has called on "White women" to take an active role in combating systemic racism in America.

Speaking in early 2023, Fernandez emphasized the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in the retail giant, particularly after the death of George Floyd. Target established the Racial Equity Action and Change task force, led by Fernandez, to accelerate its DEI efforts. The task force focuses on engaging Black customers in stores, ramping up promotions, and hiring Black employees. Target has also promised to increase its demographics of Black employees, which was at 50%, and spend more than $2 billion with Black-owned brands by 2025.

Fernandez highlighted the role of "White women" in calling out "transgressions" and using their voices to support women of color in the workplace. She singled out a White person present in the panel discussion, stating that her voice, on the basis of her race, would be given more weight in the workplace. Fernandez acknowledged the systemic history that led to the current state of affairs and emphasized the need to remove barriers to create a more equitable workplace.

Target Corporation has not yet responded to requests for comment on Fernandez's remarks. However, Fernandez emphasized the importance of creating a culture of tolerance and inclusion in the workplace, which requires shared accountability and responsibility. She called for the integration of DEI into the company's ecosystem in a way that drives business and creates a more equitable workplace.

As Target continues to ramp up its DEI efforts, Fernandez's remarks highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Her call for "White women" to take an active role in combating systemic racism underscores the need for all employees to work together to create a more equitable workplace. Target's commitment to increasing its demographics of Black employees and spending more with Black-owned brands is a step in the right direction, but sustained efforts are required to create lasting change.
