Republican Representative, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, has voiced her opposition to the debt ceiling deal reached between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy over the weekend.

Mace tweeted on Tuesday morning, "Washington is broken. Republicans got outsmarted by a President who can't find his pants. I'm voting NO on the debt ceiling debacle because playing the DC game isn't worth selling out our kids and grandkids."

Mace had previously expressed her opposition to the Limit, Save, Grow Act, which was the initial offering from Republicans in the debt limit negotiations, before eventually changing her stance. One of her primary concerns at the time was that the bill did not balance the budget.

After weeks of tense discussions, negotiators announced on Saturday that they had made a breakthrough with the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023. The bill, released on Sunday, would suspend the debt ceiling for approximately two years in exchange for spending clawbacks and other reforms.

As part of the agreement, non-defense and non-veteran discretionary spending growth would be kept down until 2024 before increasing by approximately 1% in 2025. According to a preliminary assessment from the Congressional Budget Office, if the spending caps outlined in the bill are retained for six years, it could reduce the deficit by $2.1 trillion. However, the budget caps are only required for the first two years.

About a dozen Republicans from both chambers of Congress have expressed their opposition to the agreement, which means that McCarthy and Biden will need to rely on Democrats to secure its passage. The House is expected to vote on the bill on Wednesday, with the Senate following later.

In defense of the agreement, McCarthy tweeted, "It is simple: President Biden wanted to spend more and raise taxes. Republicans fought—and won—to reduce spending and stop Biden from radical overreach. The systemic reforms we set in place mark the beginning of historic change in Washington."
