Even with all of today's technology, errors can still be made when it comes to making a calculation.

According to Breitbart, this is the case with the Defense Department, which revealed the Pentagon had made a math faux paus in estimating arms sent to Kyiv by $3 billion.

The Defense Department fessed up Thursday to overestimating the value of weapons provided to Ukraine. It seems the simple math calculation used valuations for new equipment rather than used equipment already in the U.S. inventory when assessing the cost of weapons sent to the war zone.

The error in calculating the cost came at a bad time. Breitbart News reported that the Pentagon continues to face pressure from Congress to account for the billions of dollars already dispatched to Ukraine for the cost of training, weapons, equipment, and ammunition. Lawmakers are questioning whether the level of support by the U.S. is going to be sustainable.

Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh commented on the financial error, "During our regular oversight process of presidential drawdown packages, the Department discovered inconsistencies in equipment valuation for Ukraine." She continued, "In some cases, 'replacement cost' rather than 'net book value' was used, therefore overestimating the value of the equipment drawn down from U.S. stocks."

Singh went on to say the mistake hasn't affected the level of support to Ukraine by the U.S. or interfered with the ability to provide aid to the battlefield.

An AP report notes that a defense official said the Pentagon is still trying to determine the exact total surplus amount. The official, who did not want to be identified, said a request by the comptroller to military services asks for all previous Ukraine aid packages to be reviewed using the correct cost figures.

The official said the result of the new cost figures would mean more funding would be accessible to support Ukraine.

Since February 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, the U.S. has provided $37 billion to the country for military aid.

Breitbart News reports domestic military stockpiles are at "dangerously low levels." A situation not seen for decades.
