No news is good when it involves the U.S. pulling air squadrons out of the Western Pacific.

The Post Millennial reports that the U.S. Air Force, the world’s most powerful and most extensive air presence, is facing two crises that could lessen the military’s top-dog position.

The Air Force has financial and confidence problems that could lead to the U.S. having a small USAF while maintaining its world-leading status as a robust military presence. It could also lead to China and the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAD) taking over the number one position.

More bad news from the Post Millennial is the U.S. Navy is also experiencing a decrease in fleet size while China continues to increase its fleet.

A report from the Telegraph says, “The Air Force’s troubles stem from its decision to commit $250 billion annually to Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter project. The plane [has been] plagued by cost overruns, and instead of the planned 1,800 planes, the USAF has fewer than 500.”

The USAF needing more new planes to do the job means older planes get used, placing more stress on an already stressed lifespan.

The older planes are wearing out, which leaves the world’s most prominent air presence with an estimated 5,200 aircraft. The Russian air force is negatively affected by the loss of planes due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Meanwhile, while the USAF has 3,200 more planes than PLAAF, the Chinese actively add hundreds of new planes yearly, which could risk Taiwan.

The USAF has plans to remove more than 600 fighters by 2030. The military also expects to lose over 100 Strike Eagle fighter bombers and 30 Raptor stealth super fighters.

The Post Millennial also notes another reason for the USAF to withdraw from the Western Pacific is the closing of the Kadena airbase in Japan.

The airbase is within range of an attack by non-nuclear ballistic missiles launched by China, which could completely shut down the airbase.

As an alternate solution, the USAF is to permanently remove fighter aircraft based in the Western Pacific and deploy the planes as needed.

In the next few years, the USAF’s fighter fleet may decrease from around 1,900 planes to 1,700 planes. On the other hand, China builds at least a dozen or more, J-20 stealth fighters annually, equivalent to the USAF’s F-35 and F-22 Raptors.
