A 7th-grade student in Massachusetts is defending his right to free speech, and, in response, his school is violating his first amendment rights.

According to a report by Fox News, Liam Morrison wore a T-shirt to school that said, ‘There are only two genders.’ Liam said, “I have a right to have a voice.”

Liam explained that his classmates had been cheerful and supported him. He said, “Everyone in my homeroom and everyone in my gym class supported what I had done.” He added that no student had come up to him and said anything about the T-shirt being offensive or that they felt unsafe.

The T-shirt incident occurred on March 21. While in the gym class, Liam, aged 12, was told several students and staff had complained about the T-shirt. He was asked to remove the shirt, and Liam respectfully declined. At that point, school officials called Liam’s father to come to the school and take Liam home.

An email sent to Fox New Digital from Superintendent Carolyn Lyons of Middleborough Public Schools noted Liam had violated the school’s dress code and that “the content of Liam’s shirt targeted students of a protected class, namely in the area of gender identity.”

Liam stated his reason for wearing the shirt, “The reason I wore it is because, well, everyone has a right to their opinions, and I want to be able to vice mine on a subject that a lot of people were talking about.” “I definitely don’t like that they violated what is basically the first thing that the people who were in charge of America at the time stated we were allowed to do, and nowadays it feels like that’s being taken away a lot, which is why some people choose to speak up about it. It’s not just me.”

On Monday, the Massachusetts Family Institute sent a demand letter to NMS explaining how Liam’s First Amendment rights were violated.

The Morrison family has retained the services of attorney Sam Whiting, who told Fox News Digital the action by the school was “a pretty plain case of censorship.”

Whiting continued, saying that unless a “material and substantial disruption in school” or something like illegal drug use is being promoted, students have the right “to express their political opinions - to express their beliefs on things like this.”

Liam shared that had he has been confronted, he would have said, “They are entitled to their opinions just as I am.”

The Morrison family is prepared to take legal action against the school.
