The verdict is in. Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was found guilty of seditious conspiracy on Thursday for organizing, leading, and directing his far-right extremist group on January 6, 2021, in the attack on the U.S. Capital.

The New York Post reports a Washington, DC jury heard over three months of testimony from dozens of witnesses about the January 6 attack seen around the world.

The case is one of the most severe cases. It is also a significant step for the Justice Department, which has successfully convicted leaders of two extremist groups of seditious conspiracy. Both groups aimed to keep Biden out of the White House, no matter its cost. Being charged with seditious conspiracy carries a prison sentence for those convicted up to 20 years.

Tarrio had a history as the leader of the neo-fascist group that participated in street fights with left-wing activists. When Trump told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by,” Tarrio wasn’t in Washington on January 6. Still, prosecutors told the jurors he was responsible for directing the Proud Boys to attack the Capitol building. Prosecutors also told the jury that the group considered itself “Trump’s army” and was ready for “all-out war.”

In his closing argument, prosecutor Conor Mulroe said the Proud Boys were “lined up behind Donald Trump and willing to commit violence on his behalf.”

Hundreds of messages exchanged between the Proud Boys group just days before the attack on the U.S. Capitol were the main focus of the government’s case against the far-right extremists.

Although Tarrio was not in Washington on the day of the attack, having been arrested on a separate case two days earlier and ordered to leave the city, he encouraged and supported the group via social media with a post saying, “Do what must [be] done.”

Later in the day, a group chat among the Proud Boys asked about their next move. Tarrio responded, “Do it again.” In another message, Tarrio continued his support, saying, “Make no mistake.” “We did this.”

Tarrio’s attorneys posed a defense to blame former President Trump for the mob attack because he had commented, “Fight like hell.” The attorneys argued that Tarrio was a scapegoat for those in power.

The New York Post reports the court acquitted three defendants of the sedition charge but found them guilty of obstructing the certification of Biden’s win by Congress.
