One CNN commentator wasn’t as supportive of a teacher’s union leader as you might have expected from the left-leaning network.

Fox News reports that CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings took verbal swings at Randi Weingarten, a significant teacher’s union leader. Jennings went after Weingarten for his prior support for school lockdowns during the COVID pandemic.

Jennings said: “Speaking on behalf of millions of American parents,” before he went on a long tirade about how damaging school lockdowns had been for students and parents alike. He added: “I had to teach them at home,” and “My wife had to teach them at home. I am stunned at what you have said this week about your claiming to have wanted to reopen schools.”

Weingarten caused a few feathers to be ruffled when she testified before the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic about the lockdown procedures and practices that her union supported.

Weingarten and her union have been targeted for supporting lockdowns during the COVID pandemic. In 2021, Weingarten claimed that “millions” would die because of policy choices made by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. She later tried to walk those comments back, but the fact remains that she put those comments out into the world at one point. She was far off target with her assumptions about what COVID could or could not do at the time, and some say that the statement she made could be considered misinformation about the disease itself.

Jennings continued in his takedown of this teacher’s union leader by saying: “I think you’ll find that most parents believe you are the tip of the spear of school closures,” and “There are numerous statements you made over the summer of ’20 scaring people to death about the possibility of opening schools. And I hear no remorse whatsoever about the generational damage that’s been done to these kids.”

Jennings said that his two children need extra help in the classroom and that school lockdowns negatively impacted them. He said: “I have two kids with learning differences. Do you know how hard it is for them to learn at home and not in a classroom designed for them? And for you to sit in front of Congress and the American people and say, ‘I wanted to open them the whole time,’” I am shocked. I’m stunned. I’m stunned.”
