The news isn’t good regarding rising murder rates in cities across the U.S., according to a report by the Daily Mail.

The report notes that a recent study by WalletHub says murder rates are up by 10 percent, and the reason is the war being waged against police and soft-on-crime policies.

According to the study, the worst homicide hotspots in U.S. cities, after comparing the first three months of 2021, 2022, and 2023 are Dallas, Detroit, Durham, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Memphis, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Richmond, and Washington DC. On the lower end is New York City ranking at 36, and at 38, Los Angeles.

The study noted, “In order to determine which cities have the biggest homicide rate problems, WalletHub compared 45 of the largest U.S. cities based on per capita homicides in Q1 2023, as well as per capita homicides in Q1 2023 vs. Q1 2022 and Q1 2021.”

Gregg Etter, a University of Central Missouri Professor and also connected to the Department of Criminal Justice, said, “The solutions the politicians often seek are to gain favor with one or more political interest groups in upcoming elections. If you have a problem with police use of force in isolated instances, rather than deal with the problem or the problem officers, defund the police.”

“This results in a less-effective police force, increased response times, lower police morale, and an increasing unwillingness by the police to engage in proactive policing (“the Ferguson Effect”). This has left many police forces in a strictly reactive mode, only responding to crimes that have already occurred.”

Professor Etter also had strong words to say about activist prosecutors releasing repeat offenders back into society.

He said, “In addition, no-cash bail rulings have put many dangerous criminals back onto the streets even though they are arrested several times for violent crimes. In cities where these two things are happening, the crime rate has spiked. You have less police officers and more dangerous criminals at large.”

In Professor Etter’s opinion, the importance of U.S. cities continuing to fund their police departments is crucial.

The Daily Mail reports that researchers have said the increase in murder rates can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. The news site also noted that U.S. cities led by Democrats are experiencing a faster rise in murder rates than U.S. cities led by Republicans.
