According to People.com, in an interview on Thursday with Rachel Nichols of Headliners, former Miami Heat player Dwayne Wade discussed his decision to move from Florida.

Wade is unhappy about Florida politicians and the policies in place regarding the LGBTQ community and that he felt he and his family would not “feel comfortable there.”

Fox News reported that Wade suggested the move from the Sunshine State revolved around current legislation banning school employees or third parties from providing instruction in the classroom on “gender identity” and “sexual orientation.” The age range the legislation addresses is children in kindergarten through third grade.

The bill passed through Florida’s legislature last year. According to the Fox News report, the bill is being referred to as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill and is being falsely touted by Democrats to prohibit any discussion about being gay in the state’s schools. Biden called it a “hateful bill.”

Wade has a 15-year-old child that came out as a transgender girl. The former NBA player went to court to have the child’s name and gender legally changed. He won the battle against the objections of the child’s biological mother.

Because of the situation, Wade said, “That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state.” “A lot of people don’t know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.”

Wade continued, “I mean, obviously, the tax (situation) is great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. And so, that’s one of the reasons why I don’t live there.”

Siohaughn Funches-Wade, Wade’s ex-wife, had not allowed to change the birth certificate but lost the court battle. While Funches-Wade did not want to take that step, Wade overrode her objections and took it to court, saying it was in the child’s “best interest.” The parents were not in agreement.

Wade shared with People his views on being a parent. He said, “And so I don’t know any difference. And so yes, I had to educate myself, and yes, I had to get a better understanding. And yes, I had to lose some friends along the process, but I never wavered on loving my kids and trying to find space to get the chance to understand them.”
