CNN co-anchors Kaitlan Collins and Poppy Harlow began their show by paying tribute to their colleague Don Lemon, who recently left the network after 17 years.

Harlow read a statement from CNN CEO Chris Licht thanking Lemon for his contributions: "Don will forever be a part of the CNN family. We wish him well. And we'll be cheering him on in his future endeavors."

Harlow also shared her connection with Lemon, saying he was "one of my first friends here at CNN" and expressing gratitude for his support over her 15 years at the network.

Collins added that Lemon was "a big part of this show over the last six months" and was one of the first CNN anchors to have her on his show. "That's something I'll never forget. We wish him the best," Collins said.

Lemon himself was surprised by his dismissal, which he announced on Twitter. "I was informed this morning by my agent that CNN has terminated me. I am stunned. After 17 years at CNN, I would have thought that someone in management would have the decency to tell me directly," he wrote.

He continued, "At no time was I ever given any indication that I would be unable to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play."

CNN responded to Lemon's tweet, stating his claim was "inaccurate." The network said Lemon was offered a meeting with management but released a statement on Twitter instead. The reason for Lemon's departure from the network remains unclear.

Lemon has been a controversial figure at times during his tenure at CNN. In February, he drew criticism for saying on air that GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley was not "in her prime."

The Washington Post also reported that he yelled at Collins after a tense on-air segment in December. And just days before his departure, the Post reported that White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to be interviewed by him.

Despite the circumstances of Lemon's departure, his impact on CNN and his future in journalism remain to be seen.
