The adage, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” can be attributed to recent photos taken by a Reuters photographer at the NRA convention in Indianapolis.

According to Fox News, “Parents who attended an NRA event last week slammed a Reuters photographer they claim took pictures of their children without their permission - which were then published by various outlets.”

One of the pictures taken at the convention was of a 6-year-old boy pointing a handgun directly at the camera lens. An NRA official said the picture had been “exploited” in media articles.

Reuters is defending the actions of its photojournalist and denies any wrongdoing on their part. For their part, and as a courtesy to families nervous about the feedback, Reuters has removed the names of children from pictures that have already made their rounds in news outlets, including the Daily Mail and Insider.

Dan Eckart, the grandfather of the 6-year-old boy in the gun-pointing picture, told Fox News Digital in a phone interview, “What I noticed was the photographer was moving around so that whichever direction his grandson was, she tried to get in front of him. He said the picture of his grandson aiming the firearm toward the camera was “a setup.”

The picture has been the focal point for articles highlighting the danger of guns and the frequency of deaths among children in the U.S. due to gunfire.

Attendance at the members-only NRA meeting was estimated at around 80,000 people. Photographers from outlets such as Reuters were admitted.

Allegedly, the photographer, Evelyn Hockstein, told the young boy to “look at her” while he was handling one of the guns, according to Eckart and what his grandson had told him. Eckart said the photographer identified herself, but he was under the “impression that she...was there on behalf of the NRA.”

A spokesperson for Reuters told Fox News Digital on Thursday regarding a statement by the Eckart family that “it is untrue that she asked a child to look at her.” “She took these pictures in a section of the convention designated for the media, where signs informed attendees that they might be photographed by the press, and also obtained consent of all photographed from parents or guardians, not children.”

Amy Hunter, NRA Director of Media Relations, countered back, telling Fox News Digital, “There are no signs that say attendees might get pictured by the press or members of the media, and the NRA has never had a ‘designated media section’ on the exhibit floor.”

Reuters amended its statement after being asked about the counter-comment from the NRA.
