The situation is especially problematic when the city is within the same country as the military personnel that dropped the bomb. This is the case with the Russian city of Belgorod.
According to a report from the New York Post, the unsuspecting city got a loud and destructive wake-up call on Thursday.
The plane carrying the bomb wasn’t just any primary fighter jet but a Sukhoi-34 supersonic plane that left its calling card in the city.

When the bomb made contact with the ground, it left a massive crater in the city’s center, with shattered windows, mangled cars, and litter-lined streets. The impact was so forceful it launched a car onto the rooftop of a nearby supermarket along the busy thoroughfare of Prospekt Vatutina. The blast’s power resulted in a vehicle landing upside down on the store’s roof.

Due to a crater measuring 65 feet from side to side creating havoc on one of the main streets in Belgorod, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, announced an overnight state of emergency.
Overall, the city fared well. There were no causalities, and only three residents suffered injuries from the blast. Several cars and four apartment buildings also sustained damage. There was also a nine-story apartment building nearby that the governor had evacuated as a precaution.

The news agency, TASS, notes the Russian Defense Ministry admits the Su-34 supersonic fighter bomber had discharged an unspecified munition by accident.
Also, according to TASS, the ministry stated, “As a Sukhoi Su-34 air force plane was flying over the city of Belgorod, there was an accidental discharge of aviation ammunition.” The ministry did not go into further detail about the incident’s who, what, or why.

Military experts have said it looks like the weapon was set to explode a few seconds after initially landing, allowing the bomb time to impact underground facilities. Experts speculated that the bomb was a powerful 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) bomb.

Meanwhile, as news about the bombing was being broadcast, an anchor who worked for Russian state television read from a teleprompter, “Modern weapons allow Russian units to eliminate extremists in the area of the special military operation from a minimal distance.” Even the news anchor was a little confused by what he had shared lie on the air.
Governor Gladkow made a statement on Telegram, saying, “Thank God there are no dead.”
