Harriot made this comment while discussing the reinstatement of Tennessee Representatives Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, who had been expelled from the state House after leading a gun control protest on the floor.
Host Joy Reid questioned whether the district where Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton resides is "still as seemingly racist and white supremacist and segregated as it has been." Harriot then stated that Sexton’s children attend "an even Whiter school" outside Nashville that is "one of those Christian white nationalist John Edwards ‘classical education’ societies."

Harriot went on to explain that classical education is a code word indicating that critical race theory is not taught there. He claimed that the Moms of Liberty, who oppose critical race theory, want their children to have a classical education, which is defined by the ideals of the Daughters of the Confederacy and which denies that George Washington was a slave owner.

"The viewers should know classic education is a dog whistle that means CRT is not taught here. Those people like the Moms of Liberty oppose CRT. They say they want their children to have a classical education, which means the stuff that the Daughters of the Confederacy stuff, the stuff that says George Washington was not a slave owner. That’s the stuff that they view as a classical education," Harriot commented.

Despite Harriot's disdain for classical education and traditional values, there is a growing trend supporting these ideals. According to a U.S. Census Bureau report in February, college enrollment decreased by approximately 13%, while Hillsdale College, a Christian liberal arts school, reported a 53% increase as of April 2022. According to Fox News Digital, Classic Learning Test (CLT) CEO Jeremy Tate explained that the aim of this type of education is to cultivate virtue and moral formation, leading to an incredible education.

"[The curriculum has] the aim of the cultivation of virtue, moral formation. It's an incredible education. And they are bucking the national trend, which is really a decline of young people going to the four-year brick and mortar liberal arts colleges," Tate stated.

Tate added that parents across the political spectrum want their children to go to school and come back more honest, growing in wonder and curiosity.
Harriot, a self-proclaimed ‘wypipologist,’ frequently writes about race issues and criticizes White society. For example, he suggested in April 2022 that White people should "sit out" discussing the infamous Will Smith Oscars slap because Whites find it difficult to understand how Black people relate to each other on this issue.
