As per sources, the "field hearing" will examine "New York's rampant crime and victims of Alvin Bragg." The hearing's focus is expected to escalate the confrontation between the progressive prosecutor and Republicans over the unprecedented criminal case against former President Donald Trump.
Republicans accuse Bragg of pursuing a novel legal approach against Trump while being soft on conventional crime. The Jacob Javits Federal Building will host the hearing at 9 a.m. on April 17. The location is only a few blocks ahead of Bragg's Lower Manhattan office and the courthouse where Trump was arraigned on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records last week.

Last year, Bragg faced criticism for charging Jose Alba, a bodega clerk, for second-degree murder after the victim fatally stabbed an ex-con who attacked him inside the store. After receiving nationwide criticism, Bragg's office dropped the case in July.
Bragg has refused to comply with document requests from three House committees related to the Trump case. Jordan subpoenaed attorney Mark Pomerantz last week, who wrote a book calling for Trump's prosecution after resigning from Bragg's office.

Bragg's attempt to charge Trump with a felony is based on the claim that there was an intention to conceal or commit another crime, apparently referring to campaign finance violations. The DOJ previously decided not to prosecute Trump at the time of Cohen's guilty plea to charges, including campaign finance violations and tax evasion in August 2018.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, Bragg called the House GOP's plans for the hearing "a political stunt." Bragg claimed that New York's murder rate was nearly three times lower than Columbus, Ohio, urging Jordan to take a short drive to several Ohio cities, including Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Akron, and Toledo, instead of traveling hundreds of miles out of his way to New York.
Bragg criticized the Republican's stance on supporting national gun legislation and shutting down the iron pipeline as inadequate measures for increasing public safety.
