Jean Marie Coquillon, the husband of a woman slain by an illegal immigrant, says that his wife may have lived if the immigrant had stopped and helped his wife out of the burning car.

Unfortunately, the incident was a “hit-and-run” accident, and the immigrant did not stop to do anything to help his wife out of the vehicle.

Juan Leonardo Parra Altamirano is a 33-year-old illegal alien from Ecuador who was arrested and charged with causing the deadly crash that left 46-year-old Erpharo Gilbert dead. Gilbert was a 46-year-old legal immigrant from Haiti. Sadly, she died in a horrific way burning alive in her vehicle. It was a heinous thing that would not have happened if the illegal immigrant had stopped to help Gilbert out of the car.

Breitbart reports that police allege that Altamirano fled from the scene instead of trying to stop and help out at all. Police also say that Altamirano allegedly ran because of his immigration status and the fact that he might have been afraid of being deported out of the country.

Angel’s Husband, Jean Marie Coquillon, spoke with CBS News and said that Altamirano could have stopped and helped his wife out of the burning car, but he decided to flee the scene instead. That left his wife in a vulnerable state where she could not be rescued from the situation, leaving her in a position where she was allowed to perish in a burning vehicle.

Coquillon says that he believes that Altamirano will ultimately pay for what he did in a legal sense, and he prays that his wife can rest in peace.

Police say that on April 3, Altamirano was driving on Route 24, and he switched lanes. When he did so, he struck Gilbert’s Honda Accord, which caused her to crash into a concrete barrier. It was at that time that police say that Altamirano decided to flee the scene.

Witnesses to the accident say that Altamirano appeared drunk to them before he fled the scene. He might have been concerned that he would be arrested for driving drunk, causing the accident, and being in the country illegally.

He is now in the Plymouth County Jail on a $100,000 bond. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also issued a detainer on Altamirano so that if local police authorities release him at any time, they will turn him over to ICE for processing for deportation.
