Democrats are raging after Republicans in Congress on the House Judiciary Committee decided to hold a hearing about rising crime rates in New York City.

The hearing focuses on the “victims of violent crime in New York City.”.

Breitbart reports that the committee’s hearing notice named Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Bragg is working on the historic prosecution of former President Donald Trump.

According to the notice, the hearing “will examine how Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s pro-crime, anti-victim policies have led to an increase in violent crime and a dangerous community for New York City residents.”

A spokesperson for Bragg said that this was a political stunt and that Bragg would not “engage in actual efforts to increase public safety, such as supporting national gun legislation and shutting down the iron pipeline.”

The spokesperson also said that certain types of crime have declined since Bragg took over as the prosecutor in New York City.

The latest police statistics show that Lower Manhattan had three murders this year versus ten murders last year. However, north Manhattan saw 17 murders this year so far versus 12 last year during the same time.

The hearing will take place in New York City to highlight what Republicans say is a “soft on crime” approach by liberal prosecutors nationwide. However, they say that those same prosecutors have taken a hard approach to trying to prosecute Donald Trump for his alleged crimes. This approach has made for a split between how Democrats go after real street crimes and how they are going after supposed crimes they want to assume that Trump has committed.

Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) shared Bragg’s statement. It condemned the committee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), for deciding to go to New York for this hearing.

Nadler wrote: “New Yorkers don’t need to take public safety advice from Jim Jordan, whose ‘tough on crime’ solution is to defund the DOJ and FBI.”

The hearing will occur in the Javits Federal Building, just down the road from the District Nadler represents. It is in Rep. Dan Goldman’s (D-NY) District. Goldman is not a member of the Judiciary Committee, but he still took the time to denounce Jordan’s decision to hold the hearing at this time and in this place.

Goldman even went so far as to say that Jordan is “not welcome” in his District and is doing this work at the behest of Donald Trump even though there is no evidence.
