Resettlement agencies in the United States say that some of their workers are being abused verbally by some Afghan refugees.

These agencies are responsible for resetting as many as 72,000 Afghan refugees now. However, they run into many barriers when trying to take care of this situation and get those refugees the care they need to set themselves up in the situation they need when moving into the United States.

Despite the hard work these resettlement agencies are trying to do for the refugees, they often experience sexism, racism, and verbal abuse, according to a State Department Inspector General report.

The review and reports examined the treatment of tens of thousands of refugees and how they have behaved since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

The report read: “[Resettlement Agency] officials told OIG that the [Afghan Placement and Assistance Program] involved some of the most significant challenges that they had ever faced.”

Many of the organizations that are involved with the resettlement of refugees are non-profit organizations and charity organizations that are simply doing this work in an attempt to create a safer situation for the Afghan refugees that have come to this country.

Even though many are doing this work out of the goodness of their hearts, they experience the abusive behavior outlined here. That creates a very challenging situation for people in those organizations to continue working directly with the refugees they have decided they should try to help out with.

The report continued by saying: “For example, some RA staff reported experiencing racism and sexism from Afghan clients unaccustomed to the norms of U.S. society,” and “Many parolees had very high expectations and did not understand the role of local affiliates and would become frustrated with services and housing,”

Many organizations in this field are frustrated and upset because their people get viciously attacked. They believe that their work is critical, but they don’t want to see their people suffer because they are dealing with someone from another culture that may or may not have the same values that they hold.

If that is the case, then there may be some additional and ongoing issues related to trying to help these individuals receive the help they are trying to get by coming to this country. Ideally, everyone must treat each other respectfully for this situation to work correctly.
