Fox News reports that SF State University sent an e-mail describing a student protest on campus as “peaceful.” That protest was held against Gaines speaking on campus, and it was anything but peaceful, according to Gaines.
Gaines says that pro-transgender students on campus verbally and physically attacked her. She had to barricade herself in a classroom for three hours to get out of the way of those attackers.
Fox News reports that Gaines said she was punched, shoved, and hit by protestors before she could barricade herself. City police had to be called to help get her off campus.
Despite this, Jamillah Moore, SF State’s Vice President for student affairs and enrollment management, sent an e-mail to the entire campus that did not mention the incident. Worse yet, she made comments to the effect that the protests were peaceful. Moore wrote:

“Let me begin by saying clearly: the trans community is welcome and belongs at San Francisco State University. Further, our community fiercely believes in unity, connection, care, and compassion, and we value different ideas even when they are not our own.”
She then continued by writing:
“Thank you to our students who participated peacefully in Thursday evening’s event. It took tremendous bravery to stand in a challenging space. I am proud of the moments when we listened and asked insightful questions.

I am also proud of the moments when our students demonstrated the value of free speech and the right to protest peacefully. These issues do not go away, and these values are very much at our core.”
Gaines was displeased by what was written in the e-mail. She responded:

“I’m sorry, did this just say PEACEFUL…. I was assaulted. I was extorted and held for random (sic). The protestors demanded I pay them if I wanted to make it home safely. I missed my flight home because I was barricaded in a classroom….”

She also said: “We must have different definitions of peaceful.”
Gaines also noted that Moore had blocked her on Twitter. She said: “I guess it’s easier for her to ignore me than to denounce violence against women. She won’t be able to ignore my lawsuit.”
Gaines said that if the situation had been peace, she would have welcomed it. However, that was different from the experience she had while on campus at SF State University.
