During the daily White House press briefing on Monday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refuted allegations that the administration was attempting to shield President Biden from the media by restricting his access to questions.

A reporter had asked Jean-Pierre if the administration was trying to protect the President from the media's questions, after various reporters had questioned why the President had not scheduled any formal press conferences, even on his upcoming trip to Ireland.

"Is the administration trying to protect the President from our questions? Please answer that question," a reporter asked Jean-Pierre.

Jean-Pierre denied any such effort, and assured reporters that the President frequently stood in front of them and answered their questions directly. She added that President Biden had taken a considerable number of shouted questions, which is unprecedented during any administration.

On being questioned further, Jean-Pierre responded that she did not have any formal press conferences to announce at that time.

The reporter continued to press her on the issue, pointing out that the approach was outside the norm of previous administrations, and that reporters had not had the opportunity to ask the President questions in a formal setting for quite some time.

Jean-Pierre acknowledged the reporter’s observation, saying that the matter was usually brought up among reporters every few months. She promised to get data and give it to reporters on the President’s recent availability for questions. Jean-Pierre, however, refused to share any information on planned formal press conferences at the moment.

"I understand, John. I understand. I understand. I have dealt with this question about three times already. I understand. It is the job of you all to ask this question to me. I totally get that. And that's not a problem at all," Jean-Pierre said.

This is not the first time Jean-Pierre has faced pressure during a briefing regarding the President's lack of availability to the press.

During a meeting between President Biden and the Irish prime minister at the White House last month, Jean-Pierre faced a similar predicament when she told reporters they could ask the President questions from the press pool, but was met with pushback from the media group.

One reporter stated that President Biden never answered questions during those periods.
