The White House may soon establish a briefing room for social media "influencers" to amplify President Joe Biden's appeal among young voters.

Axios reported that the Biden administration will deploy four digital personnel devoted exclusively to influencers and content creators as part of the party's ongoing efforts to target 18-29 age group voters. Speaking on the initiative, White House Deputy Chief of Staff, Jen O'Malley Dillon, explained to Axios, "We're trying to reach young people, but also moms who use different platforms to get information and climate activists and people whose main way of getting information is digital".

The report asserts that hundreds of influencers already collaborate with the White House. Democrats regard young voters as critical to their electoral prospects, having outperformed Republicans by 28 points in the 2022 midterm elections.

The White House held a watch party for a dozen influencers during the State Of The Union address in February, leading several to ask about acquiring press briefing passes, a request to which the administration responded positively.

This is not the first time the administration sought to move away from conventional media. In March 2021, the White House convened a group of nearly 30 TikTok stars and briefed them on the situation in Ukraine. During the meeting, influencers expressed concern about the amount of misinformation disseminated to the public.

Then-press secretary Jen Psaki responded, "We recognize how important your platforms are and how crucial it is to provide accurate information to those who use their voices and channels to spread truthful information."

During the midterm elections, the administration has also previously turned to social media figures like Dylan Mulveny to address questions surrounding trans issues. Axios suggests that the move towards alternative media will give creators more consistent access to the President. As Biden contemplates an official reelection bid, appeals to alternative media would continue to figure prominently in the administration's plans.
