Two former U.S. ambassadors are raising concerns about the growing number of national green energy projects involving Chinese companies.

Peter Hoekstra and Joseph Cella warn that Chinese companies, beholden to strict Chinese laws, intentionally exploit US green energy objectives. These companies are leveraging American tax incentives to build facilities and projects in the U.S., which in turn prop up Chinese industry and entrench continued dependence on Chinese technology.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Hoekstra expressed concern about the possibility that key components for electric vehicles would originate from China. He warns that this would be a grave misstep for American energy security. Cella echoed his concerns, revealing that China's intentions to dominate the green energy supply chain, from mining critical minerals in Africa to building battery components, pose a grave threat to American national security, economic security, and prosperity.

Hoekstra, a former U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands who also chaired the House Intelligence Committee, recently created the Michigan-China Economic and Security Review Group. This watchdog group is focused on reviewing Chinese investments in Michigan by monitoring its economic ventures throughout the state. Along with Cella, who is a director for the group, Hoekstra is highlighting two EV battery plant projects in Michigan. He argues that allowing CCP-affiliated companies like Gotion High-Tech and Contemporary Amperex Technology to access U.S. tax incentives ultimately enriches the Chinese battery industry, undermining the opportunity for American or ally companies to expand and grow their business.

Hoekstra and Cella's concern comes amidst a massive uproar among Michigan locals who oppose a CCP-affiliated company building a factory nearby. However, Gotion leaders are attempting to address these concerns by assuring locals that there is no CCP plot within their company.

While the Biden administration proposed EV tax credit provisions encouraging U.S. manufacturing, it refused to comment on whether domestic projects with Chinese involvement, like the Ford-CATL or Gotion proposals, would be eligible for tax incentives. Hoekstra and Cella are now appealing to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) for review while highlighting the need for a clear, consistent policy on how to handle the increasing influence of China in the green energy sector.
