Nicholas Samudio, a 22-year-old with Down Syndrome, is being charged with multiple counts of murder concerning two murders.

According to authorities, Samudio goes by the name “Smush” and is a member of the Latin Kings.

The Post Millennial reports, “According to the Chicago Sun Times, Samudio was first arrested after police chased him down in a Chrysler 300 that was stolen following a fatal shooting on February 26 that saw Tomas Villa of North Lawndale shot and killed in a case of mistaken identity. Villa reportedly was misidentified by his shooters as a rival gang member because of a hat he was wearing.”

A 21-year-old named Moses Maldonado was also arrested for the murder of Villa. The pair reportedly sat in a Chrysler 300 and waited for Villa to walk behind the car. Then, Maldonado rolled down the window and began firing while Samudio got out of the other side of the vehicle and fired several fatal shots.

When Chicago police recognized the car later that day, they instantly began pursuing it. Samudio tossed something out of a window, which was a gun. The shell casings at the crime scene match the gun police recovered. When police cornered the car, both suspects took off running. However, police used stun guns to catch them.

Police have been keeping a close eye on Samudio. On February 16, he was arrested regarding the death of a man named Humberto Marin-Garcia. This incident was due to road rage. Samudio was arrested and charged with several felonies. On March 28, he was indicted on six counts of murder. Then, on March 31, he was slammed with another six counts of murder, aggravated firearm discharge, and attempted murder. He’s also the main suspect in a murder from 2020. Authorities say he’s been arrested several times but has never been convicted. Right now, both suspects are being held without bail.

Citizens of Chicago recently rejected a candidate that was tough on crime, Paul Vallas, for a progressive mayor that wants to put more funding into mental health and social workers responding to calls to prevent crime.
