A Chinese man has been sentenced to nine years for unlawfully detaining and abusing a woman.
Fox News reports, “The abuse of the woman, “Xiaohuamei,” or Little Plum Blossom, raised widespread concerns in China in February last year and sometimes overshadowed Beijing’s Winter Olympics online. Despite digital and human censors, her story appeared in Chinese social media and prompted commentators to exhort national media to highlight the scandal.” Many said nine years isn’t a harsh enough sentence for what he did to the woman.
The court that gave the man, Dong Zhimin, the sentence did release a statement regarding the matter. It said that Dong and his late father purchased Little Plum Blossom in the early 90s for about $727.
According to Fox, “According to an investigation, Little Plum Blossom was first brought to Jiangsu province on China’s eastern coast from southwestern Yunnan province after she was abducted by two of the five people in early 1998. Then, she was missing but later found by another couple, who sold her to Dong and his father. They sold her to a farmer for $727.”

Abuse in recent years included chaining her around the neck and tying pieces of cloth or rope around her tightly. She often suffered from hunger and was forced to live in a place without water or electricity. Zhimin had a total of eight children with her.

Little Plum Blossom is still receiving treatment at a hospital. She has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. However, her oldest son says there used to be times when she did not recognize him, and now she does.
Many people remain enraged that the man was only sentenced to nine years for the cruel treatment of her and for ruining her life.
