According to Riley's husband, Louis Barker, he had brief conversations with her while she was barricaded in a room for nearly three hours. He mentioned that Riley told him she was hit by a man in a dress multiple times. Barker expressed that the incident had angered him, and he felt helpless about it, even with the police on-site to protect her.
"She told me she was hit multiple times by a guy in a dress. I was shaking. It made me that mad. It makes me sick to feel so helpless about it," Barker said. "She was under police protection and was still hit by a man wearing a dress."
On her Twitter account, Gaines shared footage showing her being escorted out of the venue by police officers while surrounded by verbal attackers.

Later, Gaines wrote a tweet stating that she was ambushed and violently hit multiple times by a man, claiming proof that women need sex-protected spaces, and still showing her persistence in continuing to speak up aloud as ever.
Prior to the assault, Gaines spoke to the students, who expressed various opposing views. Other footage from the event showed her speech being drowned out by pro-trans protesters who had become increasingly loud outside the room.

Eli Bremer, Gaines' agent, said to Fox News that, during her speech, Gaines had shared her personal experience of competing against a biological male athlete named Lia Thomas at the Women’s NCAA Swimming Championships last year. He added that Gaines seeks to educate her peers about the impact of the growing number of biological males in women’s sports on the integrity of Title IX. Bremer also claimed that Gaines was violently accosted and physically assaulted by protestors, an unacceptable occurrence in America in 2023.

The counter-protest to Gaines' speech was organized by SFSU’s Queer and Trans Resource Center, according to a statement to Fox News made by a TPUSA spokesperson.
Gaines, a 12-time All-American swimmer, has been in the national spotlight when she objected to trans swimmer Lia Thomas' participation in women’s sports. Several athletes, including former Olympian Nancy Hogshead-Makar, have warned about biological males' advantages over biological women when competing in women’s sports.
Neither the San Francisco Police Department nor SFSU has responded to Fox News' request for comments on the situation. The story is still developing, and further updates are expected.
