A woman was arrested after a cop suspected she was driving under the influence.

However, the police officer raped her and left her a citation. Now, the city will pay the victim a $1 million settlement.

Fox News reports, “The civil lawsuit filed in 2021 alleged former Brawley police Officer Ricardo Gabriel Valdez drove the woman back to her home in a patrol car, where she woke up to him having sex with her. Valdez left the DUI citation on her bedside when he left, according to the woman’s complaint.”

However, there’s a little more to the story. According to the Los Angeles Times, “The woman was contacted by Valdez on June 21, 2020, at her home after police received a call about a driver backing into the front yard and tree of a home. According to Valdez’s report of the incident, obtained by The Times, the officer knocked on her front door. The woman was so intoxicated at the time she had trouble standing alone or answering basic questions from police.”

After that, he allegedly handcuffed her to arrest her but did not take her to jail. Instead, he drove around with her for several hours before driving her home. Also, the complaint says the officer took her to a hospital for a blood alcohol test. In his report, Valdez notes that she was so intoxicated that she could not even stand up straight.

The officer’s sperm was found inside the residence, according to the lawsuit. Valdez says that he did have sex with the woman, but it was consensual sex and not rape. He was placed on leave during the investigation, but then Valdez resigned from the force.

This isn’t the first time that Valdez has faced criminal charges. Per Fox News, “Valdez was criminally charged in 2020 with multiple felonies, including sexual battery, rape, and burglary. The charges were dropped the following year.” There is no explanation as to why the case was dropped in the court records.

The victim says that this is the beginning of her being able to put the horrifying incident behind her, but she’s still upset that an officer of the law would take advantage of his badge as this officer did.
