Jailed Wall Street journalist Evan Gershkovich visited his lawyers for the first time on Tuesday. This comes around a week after Russian authorities detained him on spying charges.

Emma Tucker, the editor-in-chief, wrote in an email that Gershkovich’s ability to see his lawyers is a positive sign. She continued to add that his health is well and that Evan is thankful for the immense support he is receiving. After that, Tucker said that they are working with the White House, government officials, and the State Department to help get the journalist released.

While lawyers were able to visit, representatives from the U.S. Embassy have not been able to.

According to NBC, “Gershkovich, 31, a reporter of Russian heritage, had “made Russia his second home and was authorized to work in the country,” according to the newspaper. He was on assignment in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg, said Dmitry Kolezev, an independent Russian journalist familiar with Gershkovich’s plans.”

The Journal has not released information regarding his assignment. The Russian Government maintains that the FSB detained him on suspicion of spying and said the journalist was attempting to get information classified as a state secret from a military complex.

The United States government has repeatedly stated that Evan is not a spy and has never worked with the United States government. They are allegedly preparing to say that he has been wrongfully detained. Once this happens, the government can use its resources to help secure his release.

However, he will more than likely still face a trial soon. Trials related to espionage have a 1% acquittal rate in Russia, which doesn’t look good for Gershkovich. These trials are also typically held in secret, so it’s impossible to tell what happens in them.

Many still point out that Marine Paul Whalen remains in custody in Russia. According to Fox News, “U.S. Marine veteran Paul Whelan is also in Russian custody and has been since his arrest in 2018. Whelan was convicted on espionage charges and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. The U.S. has failed to secure his release for years, leaving him detained in Russia during negotiations for Griner’s release.”

While it’s wonderful that the White House is willing to secure this journalist’s release, and they should, what’s going on with Paul Whelan?
