Many were celebrating the narrow win of new Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

He had support from the teacher’s union. His speeches claim that crime and the safety of Chicago citizens will be a number one priority, something not seen with former Mayor Lightfoot. However, now The Chicago Tribune is shocked.

Many Democrats elected to recognize former Presidents or political figures in their acceptance speeches. President Obama began his political rise in the city of Chicago. However, Brandon Johnson did not mention him. Instead, he thanked God.

While the paper praised Johnson for having more charisma than other leaders, it couldn’t help but point out what it felt was missing. According to Fox News, “‘ He found a place for God, but not, strikingly, for Barack Obama, inarguably the most important leader this city has ever produced,’ the editorial board wrote. ‘The omission was telling, a reminder that the progressive movement of which Johnson now is a Midwest standard-bearer, feels ambivalent about the former Chicago community organizer and his more pragmatic legacy.’”

However, the paper did not spend the entire article blasting the new Governor. Instead, they took the time to point out that Obama was long ago to many people. The report points out that many young voters were in middle school when Obama delivered his legendary address to the Democratic Committee, including many who voted for Johnson.

Then, the article continues to talk about how Johnson won the election and what it meant for Chicago. One of the key takeaways about his campaign is that he had the teacher's union on his side, and they worked with him to get information out and help him secure votes.

The Tribune noted Chicago has the most progressive administration it has ever had. Johnson’s acceptance speech was full of promises to fight crime and help the people of Chicago.
