House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen at the Reagan Presidential Library in California.

Several other lawmakers were present at the meeting, where the two declared that the bond between the two nations was strong.

During the meeting, McCarthy reiterated the commitment of the United States to protect freedom and Democracy. Taiwan President Ing-Wen thanked lawmakers for coming to the meeting, saying that their support reassured the people of Taiwan.

Fox News reports, “Pointing to the regional challenges, Tsai said ‘it is no secret’ that the ‘peace that we have maintained and the Democracy which we have worked hard to build are facing unprecedented challenges.’” She pointed out that we are stronger when we stand together.

China is fuming about the meeting. The day before the meeting was scheduled, lawmakers received an email from Li Xiang, the embassy liaison that speaks to Congress for China. The email described the meeting as a provocation. The letter continued to state that “lessons have to be learned.”

Another notice from a spokesperson for China’s consulate pointed out that ignoring the One-China policy will increase tensions between China and the United States. He further states that the United States’ refusal to acknowledge the policy will make the people of China more determined to reunite the two, referring to China and Taiwan.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has yet to commit to providing troops to Taiwan in the event of an invasion, which some say is imminent.
